ISLE OF HARRIS GOLF CLUB
Dear Life Members,
The Open Tournament, played on the 19th of August at the course, proved to be an
outstanding success. Those of you who played in the Inaugural Life Member's
Tournament in 2004 will remember the great camaraderie and joy of that occasion.
In its own way the Open Tournament equalled that experience.
Almost 80 players graced the course in ideal golfing conditions and as I
intimated in my few words at the prizegiving, I was filled with pride, given all
that we have achieved over the past few years.
There were worthy winners, of course. The four magnificent and beautifully
tailored jackets, made from our very own, copyrighted, Isle of Harris Golf Club
Harris Tweed for section winners, outshone the limp green Augusta version! The
recipients duly measured, will receive their personal jackets very soon. We are
grateful to the Isle of Harris Knitwear Company for their most generous
partnership. We are also indebted to the Luskentyre Tweed company for their
support and for the original and tasteful design. I was so taken by the quality
and beauty of the jackets that I placed my order on the day. It is to be hoped
that Life Members will want to take advantage of this opportunity too, thus
supporting our sponsors, the club and the local Harris economy. Be aware
however, that the Harris Tweed jacket will last a lifetime, showing a real
commitment and association with your club and the island. More information on
obtaining the jacket, plus fours, plus
two's and other garments will follow in my next Life Members letter. You can
however
indicate your interest by calling Mairi or Katherine direct on 01859 511 240
or
01859 511 108.
We are also extremely grateful to Caledonian Macbrayne and Comhairle
Nan Eilean Siar for their generous support and sponsorship.
Archie Macleod and family have also donated a magnificent trophy and a monetary
sum (redeemable tokens) for the best performance by a local member. Archie was
one of the founders of the present club and we owe much to him and his group for
their vision in the early days of Harris Golf Club.
Next year? My thinking is that we should combine the Open with a Life Members
Tournament, possibly scheduling the Life Member's the day before the Open. What
is clear is that we will have to decide soon, to allow you to book accommodation
early. We are in a sense victims of our own success and we know that many will
want to be involved.
So there we go. Another glorious event on your course.
My sincere thanks to all who helped in any way and for your club, its
onwards and upwards!
We shall be in touch soon.
Best wishes,
Willie Fulton, Captain
