Captains Report - AGM 26 January 2012

February 2012

Isle of Harris Golf Club AGM 26-1-2012 Captain’s report Looking back over the year as Captain of this fine Club, has enabled me recognise what a privilege it has been and, one that I have been happy to serve. As the saying goes” a Club is only as good as its members” and by the numerous comments made by visitors and friends over the years, this is indeed a very good Club, of which all of us can be proud. I am pleased to report that there have been many good things which have taken place over the past year, although I will highlight a few disappointments. Following the celebration of the new Club house we have been let down by the continuing leak in the changing room. Various meetings with UBC have taken place in an attempt to identify the cause of the problem we are none the wiser. The Clubs development committee decided to allow UBC one more attempt to solve the problem, if this proves unsuccessful we will focus our attention through other means in order to correct this matter as quickly as possible before more serious damage is done. The bad weather during this winter and to a certain extent last summer has had a big impact on the condition of the course. 5th,6th and 9th fairways suffering the most. Some work on the culvert to stop water running down to the 5th fairway has been carried out by the Council, however more work will be carried out as the problem has not been solved. Problems on the 6th will have to be discussed as part of the course design proposals. As most of us are aware the 9th fairway suffers during winter from high volumes of sand being blown onto the fairway from the coast, however this year in particular, has seen the most damage. A member of the Council responsible for coastal erosion will be visiting the course in February to offer advice on possible preventative measures which the Club can consider. Our ladies section continues to meet through out the year and my thanks go to our hardy few who continue to keep this section going. It would be nice for our ladies and indeed good for the Club to see more ladies joining the Club. .I feel this is a responsibly for all of us to seek out new potential lady members. This section is an integral part of the Clubs structure. The club’s membership overall is healthy, however as always, it is essential for all of us to encourage new members to join, in particular , juniors as they are the Clubs foundation of tomorrow. Again the Life Members and Open tournaments were a success. Thanks to Hugh Maclean, the Clubs Committee and work parties for all the hard work given. The Open truly is a success story and now the Clubs major event of the year. The inter Island matches took place again last year and for the Club with some success. These meetings provide an opportunity to continue with the good relations that is shared through out. I would urge all playing members to support these matches as we owe it to our host and to our Club to put in a good performance. The Club continues to run very smoothly. This is due to the hard work that is carried out behind the scenes. At our annual dinner it was an opportunity which gave me much pleasure to acknowledge the sheer dedication and hard work of our Treasurer. I should also, on behalf of the Club, like to give thanks to our Secretary, who gives so much of his time and works hard dealing with Club matters. His work load is very demanding. Other members I wish to thank, Secretaries Angus MacSween handicap, Angus Morrison Match Secretary, and Hugh Maclean our Greens Convener. Junior coaching continues to be provided by the Club around the schools, this is carried out by the Club’s Juniors Convenor Kenny Morrison and Hugh Maclean. We are very fortunate to have a Green Keeper who takes such an interest in the Club’s development, regularly seeking ways for improvement. My thanks to Donald for all his efforts and enthusiasm over the past year. Also to Billy Scott for regularly supporting Donald over the last year. Last and certainly not least, my thanks to Kenny Morrison my Vice Captain for his support to me over the last year. Mal Hall. (Captain)
