Summary of 2014

December 2014

I don’t know what happened to the last eleven months, I must have blinked, as here we are again, getting ready for Christmas celebrations.

Here at the Golf club, it has been a very good year. The annual Life Members and Open competitions went very well, with the Open fully booked, even before its closing date. Inevitable the weather kept up to its usual form, wet and windy. This did not seem to have any effect on the competitors taking part, as this now seems par for the course! They’re a hardy lot.

For the first time in the history of the Open competition a Harris Club Member won the Harris Golf Club tweed Jacket. This marvellous achievement was carried out by Billy Fraser, congratulations go to Billy.

What a wonderful summer we had, this made the golf even more pleasurable. The month June being a particularly memorable occasion. Harris Golf Club being one of only five Clubs throughout Scotland to be selected for a visit of the Ryder Cup. A spectacular sight was the arrival of a helicopter carrying this famous trophy and landing in front of the Club house, an ideal landing placed with a backdrop of Scarista bay and Toe head.

Traditionally the first Saturday in December is for the Club’s annual dinner and prize giving event, this year it took place on the 6th December and was held at the Harris Hotel. The food and arrangements at the hotel were first class. A few of the winners will have a lot of cleaning to do throughout the new year with the number of trophies they walked away with!

As we move closer to the New Year, for anyone wanting to give golf a try we are aiming to run in the New Year a few evening classes for beginners, also welcome, anyone wishing to brush up on their golf.. We want more ladies to join the Club, so come on you ladies, and give it a try. A comment has, on the odd occasion, been made “golf is about spoiling a good walk “well if you haven’t had the chance to visit the Club you will see what a wonderful place for playing this very popular game of golf is Together with the opportunity for good exercise, shared amongst a group of friendly club members. Further information on the coaching programme, re location and dates etc. will follow.

To all our Members, Life Members, their families and all our friends. I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a healthy, peaceful New Year.

Mal H.G.C

whose sands make Malibu look like a playschool sandpit" - Vic Robbie(Daily Mail)
